The Forest
Stewardship Council (FSC)
Systems for certification of sustainable forest management remain
a topic of debate in global forest industry. WWF, for example, has
recently advised the international financial community to invest in
forest products companies which have obtained Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) certification. SCA's Swedish forests were certified under the
FSC scheme in January 1999. The Forest Stewardship Council's mission
is to achive environmentally-sound, socially-beneficial and economically-viable
forestry world-wide. FSC provides a credible forest certification
system to attain this goal.

SCA
is a global leader in FSC-certified products |
| SCA continued to develop its position as
global leader in FSC-certified products during 2000, receiving FSC
Chain-of Custody certificates for Tunadal and Munksund sawmills, for
the Östrand pulp mill, producing TCF bleached kraft pulp and chemical
thermo-mechanical pulp, and for the production of LWC paper at the
Ortviken paper mill. SCA is now able to
|
 |
offer a broad array of FSC-
certified products, ranging from solid wood to pulp and on to high
quality newsprint and magazine paper.
|
 |
SCA offers
large volumes of FSC-certified pulp and publication paper
SCA is unique in offering large volumes of FSC-certified pulp and
publication papers. These have been well received in the marketplace,
including by the British publisher, BBC Magazines. It has been able
to publish its first FSC-certified title, "Wildlife", and will introduce
more magazines carrying the FSC logo. Other examples of Chain-of-Custody
certification based on SCA's paper products can already be found in
the UK, Sweden and Denmark.

SCA has joined the WWF Global Forest & Trade
Network
In addition to customers, SCA's stakeholders include private forest
owner suppliers and international NGOs. During 2000, SCA was granted
the entitlement to issue FSC group certification. This enables the
company to service private forest owners seeking FSC certification,
through interest among private forest owners has so far been limited.
SCA is committed to FSC, and fully supportive of its work to promote
responsible forest management world-wide. SCA considers FSC to be
the most credible verifier of responsible forest management.
SCA Forest Products has recently joined the WWF Global Forest &
Trade Network, which promotes trade in certified forest products.
SCA recognizes the efforts made to verify the environmental standard
of forest management under the PEFC (Pan-European Forest Certification)
scheme and promotes their development into credible forest certification
which can be accepted by customers and supported by important stakeholders.
